This AAVP satellite meeting will provide an update of recent activities and plans for moving the vaccine R&D agenda forward in Africa and internationally. Presentations will include:

  1. An AIDS-Free Africa Through an Effective Vaccine—Update on AAVP's new Strategic Plan for 2006-2011. (Alash’le Abimiku)

  2. Working together for an effective Advocacy Strategy. (Pontiano Kaleebu, Malaki Owili, Vincent Agu)

  3. Expanding and strengthening research capacity in Asia—Update on efforts by WHO and other partners to develop an Asian HIV vaccine network. (Jean Louis Excler, Punnee Pitisuttithum)

  4. The Adolescent Agenda: From Concept to Clinical Trial Design—Plans by South African investigators working with the HVTN to prepare for the first adolescent HIV vaccine trial. (Glenda Gray)

  5. Treatment in Trials: The Evolving Standard of Care in Vaccine Trials—Update on the emerging standard of HIV care, including anti-retroviral therapy, in all vaccine trials. (Zarifah Reed)

Connecting the Dots in AIDS Vaccine R&D—A satellite session sponsored by AIDS Vaccine Advocacy Coalition (AVAC), HIV Vaccine Trials Network (HVTN) and the US National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) in support of the Global HIV Vaccine Enterprise.

  4. The social science research landscape as part of AIDS vaccine R&D. (Zuhayr Kafaar)

  5. Life between conferences—A panel discussion focusing on keeping communities informed, next steps to increase community literacy and perceptions and beliefs of stakeholders that may impact clinical trials in the time between AIDS Vaccines 2007 and 2008. (Moderated discussion)
