Secretariat

The Mission of the Secretariat is to:

  • Evolve the Scientific Strategic Plan through management of the Enterprise Expert Groups, and synthesis of funder/stakeholder input
  • Act as a knowledge resource for the scientific and funding communities in key scientific, operational, and regulatory areas
  • Enable new forums for collaboration among Enterprise partners and other stakeholders and act as a catalyst for their involvement
  • Serve as an information management and sharing resource for Enterprise participants
  • Mobilize significant additional funding of HIV vaccine research and infrastructure as implied by the Scientific Strategic Plan.

Executive Director:

Dr. Alan Bernstein

Dr. Alan Bernstein is the inaugural executive director of the Global HIV Vaccine Enterprise.

Dr. Bernstein was the founding president of the Canadian Institutes of Health Research. Over seven years, he built CIHR into one of the world’s leading research agencies, supporting more than 11,000 health researchers with an annual budget of US$1 billion.

Dr. Bernstein received his Ph.D. in Medical Biophysics at the University of Toronto. Following postdoctoral work in London where he first began working on retroviruses, he returned to Canada to join the faculty of the Ontario Cancer Institute. He later served as head of the Division of Molecular and Developmental Biology at the Samuel Lunenfeld Research Institute at Mount Sinai Hospital, and then its director of research.
